What to Wear for Working with Clients
While many of us feel we need some form of uniform to tell people who we are there are many occasions whereby this can be problematical. For instance, if you are booked at a private home that has it's own uniformed servants you may appear as a threat to them and therefore it would be better to appear as an 'executive' in order that you do not upset the smooth running of the household. By all means wear a head scarf or cap which is a legal requirement but keep anything else to black and white or grey and white with a sensible apron to cover. A good washable suit, lightweight enough to be comfortable in the kitchen is fine. Many companies provide polyester suits of all types for hotel work and these are ideal.
Black and White is Smart
A black shirt/trouser and a white Bistro Apron is a very smart outfit for a male chef. Bandanas, baseball caps or visors and sometimes well designed skull caps are all that is needed for a smart and practical look.

For ladies who prefer colour,
Whatever colour you choose as your 'look' always add white. The sunny
yellow and white is rather pleasant in the kitchen. Blue and Navy and
white tends to look a little clinical and green and white is positively
janitorial. Red and white is striking and grey and white very clean
and professional looking. Don't forget the head covering while cooking
or serving. A tight neat hairstyle is ok for waiting at table without
the hat but in the kitchen you must wear something.
If you don't any possible hair will be blamed on you, remember you are working in a person's home not a highly specialized kitchen environment. Your client is immune to his/her own kitchen but not to you!
The Butchers Apron
My favourite combination is White shirt or Chefs Jacket, Black or Navy trousers (plain) and a striped Butchers Apron. That way everyone knows what you are doing and the apron always looks clean. Not so suitable if you have to serve though. I also like the baseball visor in white navy or black. You can have your logo on these or order one with Personal Chef UK on it
